Subject
Process of political and economical integration in Europe (EU)
Aims
These lectures enable the students to gain insight into the complex
process of European integration after the Second World War. The
students appreciate the political, social, cultural and economical
factors that play an important role in European integration. They
learn about the main historical developments and the most important
themes in past, present and future. Also the students pay attention
to the basic organizational structure of the EU (institutions, division
of power, rules, etc) and they realize which possibilities and problems
are created by this structure.
Further aims:
· to support Project 6: How does Europe communicate with
relevant theory
· to reflect on European integration
· to learn how 'Europe' communicates and how Brussels tries
to reach the European citizens.
Content
Increasingly people and countries work together. One of the most
daring developments in this respect is the European Union: a group
of 15 modern states working together in the field of politics and
economics. With one common currency (the euro) and a nearby enlargement
of another 10 to 11 member-states the EU is a good example of international
cooperation. Naturally, this process needs a lot of good communication:
between people, between countries, between institutions, between
Brussels and all the European citizens. Is this possible on such
a large scale? What are the methods, possibilities and problems?
In short: How does the EU work and how does Europe communicate?
